2007 marks the eighteenth year in which the University of Michigan, under the leadership of the Council for Disability Concerns, has sponsored educational programs and events designed to increase awareness of important disability issues. These activities are offered to promote a greater recognition of the skills and talents which people with disabilities contribute to the University and the greater society.

All events are free of charge and open to all members of the University community and the public. All programs are held in accessible locations. Sign language interpreters will be provided on request.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 11

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM "Physical Activity and Participation"
Anne-Mette Bredahl, Paralympic competitive skier and clinical psychologist will discuss the challenges and possibilities of physical activity with a disability.

Dr. John Greden (Director of the Depression Center ), Eric Hipple, and panel.
The physiology of and continuing stigma associated with depression; the experiences of those with depression at work; and strategies for providing a respectful and supportive work environment.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM "They Shall Walk"
Monty Reed of the They Shall Walk Foundation demonstrates his Lifesuit, a robotic device he believes will assist even quadriplegics to walk and climb stairs.

4:00-5:30 PM "The Long Road Home II"
This film follows the journey of more than thirty disability rights activists who marched from Augusta to Atlanta to push for Georgia's compliance with the Supreme Court's Olmstead decision, which affirms the right of people with disabilities to live in their own homes and communities rather than in nursing homes and institutions. It will be followed by a Q&A session with UM student Sarah Watkins, who was a participant in the 2006 Long Road Home March.

Dr. Dan Ferris of the UM Division of Kinesiology talks about the effects of exercise on neurological rehabilitation after spinal cord injury and stroke.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM "UMHS Disability Challenge"
Experience disability simulations which will help you understand the realities and barriers faced daily by people with disabilities. Also includes strategies for overcoming them.

Carolyn Grawi from the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living will speak on the issues and barriers people with disabilities face daily.

Dr. Dale Ulrich of the UM Division of Kinesiology talks about the benefits of learning how to ride for children with disabilities and strategies for teaching all children how to ride.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM "Bullying in the Workplace"
Dr. Loraleigh Keashly of the College of Urban, Labor, and Metropolitan Affairs at Wayne State University will discuss the characteristics of people who bully and what to do, both individually and organizationally, if you are being bullied or bullying is taking place in your department.

4:00 PM – 5:30 PM "The Kids Are All Right"
A half-hour documentary about a renegade Jerry's Kid named Mike Ervin. A Muscular Dystrophy Association poster child in the 1960's, today Mike is an outspoken disability rights activist who challenges the MDA's representation of people with disabilities in its Labor Day telethon through his activist group, Jerry's Orphans. Mike Ervin will comment on the film, discuss his work and be available to answer questions.

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM "(dis)Ability in the Classroom" with the CRLT (Center for Research on Learning and Teaching) Players
Depicts instructor and students struggling with the many issues, stereotypes and dynamics surrounding visible and hidden disabilities on campus.

Phillippa Clarke, Mary Beth Ofstedal, Robert Schoeni, all from the Institute for Social Research, will present a comparative analysis of similarities and differences between the USA and Asian counties regarding trends of disability among the older population and the social implications of aging with disability. Followed by informal reception with refreshments
