GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANTS
Effective September 1, 2008, the minimum full-time equivalent stipend rate for four (4) calendar months for Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRA’s) will be $16,070 per term. This rate includes an increment intended to assure competitiveness of stipends vis-à-vis peer institutions nationwide. Departments and principal investigators will continue to have the flexibility to set GSRA stipends at rates above this minimum. As in the past, GSRA’s with a 25% or greater appointment fraction will pay no tuition (i.e. 100% tuition waiver).
GRADUATE STUDENT INSTRUCTORS AND GRADUATE STUDENT STAFF ASSISTANTS Bargaining of the revised GEO contract concluded in March and the agreement was ratified by the union in late April. A link to the new contract will be posted on the Academic HR website in the near future and printing/distribution for Fall will soon follow.
Effective on September 1, 2008, the minimum full-time equivalent (FTE) salary rate for four (4) calendar months for Graduate Student Instructors (GSI’s) and Graduate Student Staff Assistants (GSSA’s) will be $16,135 per term. This reflects the GEO contract-required 3% increase in full time rate, as well as an increment reflective of the provost’s initiative to maintain competitive stipends vis-à-vis peer institutions nationwide.
A rate schedule illustrating the impact of these rate changes for GSI’s and GSSA’s at various fractions of effort is attached and will soon be posted on the AHR website. Note that this rate schedule (which is provided to facilitate administrative processing of appointments but is not itself a part of the GEO contract) also includes some modified effort fractions that were not previously included in the GEO contract. Please review the rate schedule closely before processing 2008-2009 GSI or GSSA appointments for this coming year. Beginning 9/1/2008, GSI’s and GSSA’s with a .237 (23.7%) or greater appointment fraction will pay no tuition (i.e. 100% tuition waiver) and those with less than a .238% appointment will receive partial tuition waivers. A description of these and other changes to the GEO contract resulting from bargaining is also attached.
