OF EVENTS
The Business and Finance
Diversity Committee stems from a charge given by former University
of Michigan CFO, Dr. Farris Womack.
Annual MLK
Day Convocations - The most highly visible project
the committee is responsible for is the MLK Day Convocation.
The last two years the performances were theater style and
featured a variety of acts representing various backgrounds.
Diversity
Forum - These forums were held in the spring of '94,
'95 and '96 at the Michigan Union. The target audiences were
members of the various diversity committees within the Business
and Finance area.
Resource
Manual - The Diversity Manual was the project of the
first two Business and Finance Diversity Committees (BFDC).
The first part of the manual contains a copy of the Michigan
Mandate, committee progress reports, a listing of committee
members and departmental resources that can be borrowed. The
second part of the manual contains a complete listing of all
the materials in the University Film and Video Library relating
to diversity and multiculturalism.
Diversity
Update Newsletter - The committee publishes a quarterly
newsletter focused on diversity topics. The next publication
is scheduled for early / mid August.
Orientation
Sessions - The committee offered diversity orientation
sessions for all B&F employees hired after July 1991.
The sessions ran from July 1994 until April of 1996.
Autumn conference,
featuring Dr. Edwin Nichols - Dr. Edwin Nichols was
invited to be a guest speaker and conducted his "Cultural
Awareness" Seminar on November 16 & 17 1994. On November
16, he directed an abbreviated 2-hour seminar for members
of the Business and Finance Seminar Group. That evening, he
opened the seminar to include the entire University community.
On November 17, he conducted a full day seminar for all interested
staff in Business and Finance. Dr. Nichols is an internationally
known diversity speaker, whose expertise lies in making diversity
work with total quality management.
Business
and Finance Diversity Choir - The BFDC Choir began
in 1992. Originally only slated to perform for MLK Day, the
choir's popularity has soared since 1992. Since then they
have performed at a number of venues across the University
including, Gifts of Art Program, Employee Appreciation program,
Kellogg Eye Center, Multicultural Food Fest and President
Duderstadt's farewell and Dr. Bollinger's investiture.
