Action Plan / Experience

Do you need to build experience before you are ready for your ultimate goal? A lateral move to increase the breadth of your experience or a promotion to increase your level of responsibility could be a good long-term career move. Even a demotion may be worth it if you are interested in entering a new field. Here are some ideas for getting started:

Internships give you experience in your desired field. These may be paid or unpaid, but be sure you can get recommendations from it.

Volunteering A relatively safe haven to develop and try new skills where your paycheck is not at risk. Don't treat it casually; you will want to be able to have a strong reference. You may even meet someone who could lead to your next job.
