Self-Assessment
"What do I want to be
when I grow up? "
It's cute to think about your future when you're
four. Not so cute when you're 40. No matter your age, planning your
future begins with the same simple question - "What
do I want?"
To find the answer, you must first know yourself.
You need self-assessment. It can help you gain a greater understanding
of your skills, preferences, values, as well as vision of life and
work. And it can lead to a fulfilling career and more satisfying
work life. Just think, you could actually feel good about putting
in your 40 every week. You could take to saying "TGIM."
You could find yourself whistling while you work. But first, you
must simply find yourself.
This site provides you with
a variety of resources that will facilitate your journey into self-discovery:
- Career centers on the Internet, on campus
or in your community that offer one-on-one career counseling and
testing
- Self-guided books, containing a variety of
ideas and exercises to help you clarify your thoughts about work
- Career advice from columnists and counselors
on-line (should only supplement advice you seek from career counselors, supervisors,
mentors, your social and Career Family networks, and more experienced members of your department)
As you go through self-assessment, keep in mind
that processing the information, reflecting on it, and relying on
your ‘inner voice’ to tell you what feels right, will
be the key in determining how much you get out of this process.
Trust yourself. You know what's right for you.
