eMploy Updates
Did you know… Holding down the Control key while clicking on the original resume format can sometimes override that annoying Pop-Up Blocker you get when viewing candidate resumes? Note: This doesn’t work under all circumstances and you may have to click on Original more than once while holding down the Control key to have a successful override. |
Interested in Back Issues of this Newsletter? The eMploy Documentation Guide is also available online through MAIS LINC at: https://maislinc.umich.edu/mais/pdf/ |
ORIGINAL VS. CONVERTED RESUMES When viewing your candidate resumes, the Original resume format is the exact resume that was uploaded, copied & pasted or created by the applicant. The Converted format turns that original resume file into a searchable text format that is utilized when searches are performed in the eMploy database. Why should you look at both? The converted format also contains the applicant’s answers to the prescreening questions assigned to that job requisition. The responses to these questions can sometimes assist you in determining if that person might be a viable candidate for your job. |
eMploy – Helpful Hints
Managing Candidate Pools - Part Two
In last month’s Newsletter we discussed tips for writing an effective job posting as a tool to help manage your large candidate pools. However, some jobs are just popular and receive jobs bids from an abundance of more and less qualified applicants. So, how can you determine who might be most qualified? eMploy’s FIND MATCHING CANDIDATES tool, available only on the Hire Manager security desktop searches candidates’ resumes for keywords and phrases, and weighs the results to rank the candidates for your job posting. (Note: The other eMploy security roles have this option on their desktop, but it is return search results on the entire candidate database.) This can be a valuable aid when sorting through a large list of bidders. However, it is only an aid and the candidate rankings that it provides should not function as the complete assessment of the applicants’ qualifications. We’ve included an example of what a Find Matching Candidates search might look like for last months job posting using the keywords identified and highlighted in yellow. Another copy of the sample job posting is attached for your reference. Using the Writing an Effective Job Posting tips and the Find Matching Candidate tools together can help alleviate some of the pain in managing your large candidate pools. Note: The step by step for using the Find Matching Candidates tool is available for printing through MAIS LINC at http://maislinc.umich.edu. The name of the document is “Working with Candidate Pools”

Required: |
“Administrative Assistant”, secretarial, “administrative support”, “Part Time”, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, team, Clerical, multi task, organized, customer service, Fundraising, “interpersonal skills”, “communication skills” |
Entering words in the ‘Required’ box will only return resumes that contain ALL of the words or phrases that are listed. Note the use of quotation marks around phrases. This ensures that only resumes that contain those phrases will be returned as opposed to returning resumes containing each of the distinct words in the phrase. |
Optional: |
DAC, “Business Objects”, development, “University policy” |
Entering words in the ‘Optional’ box will return resumes that contain any or all of the words or phrases that are listed. It will also rank the candidates by the number of times the words or phrases appear in their resumes. A five star ranking is the highest and a one star ranking is the lowest. |
Click on View Query and delete the content of all three boxes:
| Most Important: | Important: | Least Important: |
| NOTE: The content of these three boxes is system generated and not always relevant to your search. | NOTE: It is recommended that you DELETE all content from these boxes prior to running your search. |
NOTE: Leaving these boxes populated could result in unsatisfactory search results. |
No further information is required to complete your search. Please click on the SEARCH button.
NOTE: A good way to structure your search is to just use words from Department Minimum Qualifications in the Optional box. Then use the Refine Search for these Results feature and add the Desired Qualifications to the Optional box. This will rank your candidates first by Department Minimum Qualifications and then by Desired Qualifications. Always review the resume to confirm your candidate’s qualifications. Matching words will be highlighted on the candidate resume when viewed from the search results page.
