Work/Life Resource Center Now Offering Searchable Child Care Database

The Work/Life Resource Center (WLRC) is pleased to announce a new resource for University community members with children – a new web-based, self-serve child care finder! This search feature is an easy-to-navigate child care database with more than 1,500 childcare providers including five U-M child care centers on or near campus.

Simply go to www.umich.edu/~hraa/worklife and click on “Find Child Care Now.” You’ll be able to customize a search based on the type of child care (family day care homes, group day care homes, childcare centers, and school age care), location (near your home or near your work), amenities (meals provided, special pick-up times, etc.) and care philosophies (Montessori, faith-based, etc.) you prefer.

This searchable database is available round-the-clock, seven days a week to provide you with a list of child care resources that meet your needs. The list will give you the name of the provider, type of child care setting, telephone number, directions to the location, as well as accreditation status, special training and experience. The database is maintained and continuously updated by Child Care Network, a non-profit childcare resource and training agency in Washtenaw County.

This new web access is designed to complement the personal service you can already receive from WLRC child care referral specialists. If you’d prefer to talk with a real live person regarding your child care search, call (734) 936-8677 during business hours and make a telephone or in-person appointment. A WLRC child care referral specialist will work with you to identify a list of child care options that best fits your needs.

“We believe the Web site will be a great addition to the current service ,” says WLRC manager Leslie de Pietro. “Both systems will work together to enhance parents’ search for child care. The web-based self-serve child care finder provides immediate access to a customized list of options. While someone who is more unfamiliar with a computer or this community can be served personally, usually within a few days, by our professional staff. ”

HR Metrics Project Update

The HR Metrics Project is an initiative to develop a web-based tool that includes Human Resource and Financial measurements to facilitate strategic decisions regarding human capital management and staffing trends.

Over 60 campus users, including MAIS Help Desk personnel, have completed ‘metrics’ training. The training included how to use the ‘metrics tool’ and how to conduct an analysis of various human resource issues (e.g. termination analysis, succession planning, ethnicity/diversity analysis, etc.). Also, included was what type of presentation of the analysis would be best.

The users left the classroom eager to begin their analysis of their own departments and have reported since their training, how they have been using the tool.

Currently, the ‘metrics tool’ contains over 60 human capital measures which can be analyzed (using drill-down methodology) starting at the Campus level and ending at the department level. Multi-year comparisons for trend analysis are also included.

Examples of the approximately 60 multi-year measures include:

  • FTE and head count
  • Years of service by age
  • Terminations by ethnicity and reason (voluntary/involuntary)
  • Retention rate by ethnicity
  • Salary ranges by gender
  • Years of service by age by gender (for succession planning)
  • Total compensation per FTE
  • Operating expenses per FTE
  • Average days to fill a position

Access to a “living” Human Capital Report is also provided to assist in departmental trend analysis and succession planning.

For more information, including how to participate in the project, go to: http://www.businessintelligence.umich.edu/projects/hr_metrics.html
