SECTION I: Women’s Progression through the Ranks from
Student to Faculty to Academic Administrator

(veiw list of charts)

Women as of 2001 receive 51% of all bachelor’s degrees at the University of Michigan (Chart 1). Since the last volume of this report, the percentages of women receiving professional, master’s and doctoral degrees have increased slightly. The proportion of women enrolled in UM’s master’s or professional degree programs stands at 46% and 45% respectively, while women represent 39% of doctoral degree recipients. Caucasian women students account for 36% of all degree holders. Asian women account for nearly 6%; African-American women, 4%; Hispanic women, 2%; and Native American women, 0.2% (Chart 3).

Currently, 26% of all tenured and tenure track faculty are women, with women of color accounting for 6% of these positions (Charts 1 and 2).

When comparing UM’s percentage of women faculty to the percentage of women in the relevant hiring pools of Ph.D.s, the University lags dramatically behind the national pool in terms of gender representation. Since 1979, the percentage of Ph.D.’s awarded to women nationally has increased substantially across the disciplines (Chart 4). Gains range from 12% in the physical sciences to 23% in education and the life sciences. However, at the University of Michigan in 2001, the percentage of women faculty in most fields hovered near the 1979 national Ph.D. attainment rates for women. In only two fields, engineering and professional/others, are the proportions of female faculty appreciably greater than the proportion of doctorates awarded to women in 1979.

The University has made considerable progress in the appointment of women to senior leadership positions in recent years. As of 2001, women represent 47% of deans and 50% of executive officers. However, women account for only 28% of all department chairs (Chart 1). Women of color hold a small number of these academic leadership positions, representing just 10% of executive officers, 5% of deans, and 2% of department chairs (Chart 2). These percentages equate to 1 executive officer, 1 dean and 4 department chair positions being held by women of color. This is a good example of how percentages should be considered in conjunction with the actual numbers presented in any given chart.
