SECTION III: Staff Composition and Compensation

(veiw list of charts)

Staff Composition
Women account for 71% of all University non-instructional staff positions (Chart 159). Gender disparities in the composition of most job families have persisted over the past decade. For example, 90% or more of Office and Nursing staff are women, while only 37% of Technical and 3% of Operating Engineers and Trades staff are female. In fields where women make up more than half of the staff, women’s representation has increased since 1995. By contrast, in the fields where women make up less than half of the staff, the percentage of women’s representation has changed very little.

When staff composition is analyzed by race, women of color continue to hold less than 8% of positions in the job families of Academic Administrative Ungraded, Operating Engineers and Trades, Security and Public Safety, and Technical Staff (Chart 159). The job family with the highest percentage of women of color is the Service/Maintenance Staff (26%). For most job families, composition rates by race have remained nearly constant over the past decade (Charts 160 through 168).

Staff Compensation
Within the more highly compensated salary grades, staff women tend to hold fewer positions than men. Except in job families that are overwhelmingly female, a greater percentage of women than men earn salaries at the low end of the spectrum, and a greater percentage of men earn salaries at the high end of the spectrum (Charts 169 through 173). For example, women constitute 74% of the 5,700 Professional and Administrative (P & A) staff earning less than $50,000 and 56% of the more than 3,200 P & A staff earning between $50,000 and $99,999 (Chart 171). Among the 232 plus P & A staff earning over $100,000, women represent 36%. As another example, in the Technical job family, 55 men but only one woman earn over $50,000 per year (Chart 173).

It is important to note, however, that since 1995, increased numbers of women have entered into the higher salary grade ranges (Charts 174 through 178). Advancement occurred particularly among P & A and Academic Ungraded Staff, where women in salary grades 16 and above increased from 30% to 41% between 1995 and 2001 (Chart 176).
