Department Name

LSA UG:  Hlth Science Scholars

Application Procedure

The Health Sciences Scholars Program (HSSP) typically seeks 2 graduate student instructors (.50 appointments) each fall and winter semester to lead discussion sections for the HSSP Core Course, UC 105, “Perspectives on Health and Health Care,” and UC 106, “Perspectives on Health and Health Care, II.”  UC 105-106 is required of all HSSP student participants.  Each GSI appointment is for one semester only.  Candidates are eligible to be reappointed for additional semesters.

UC 105-106 is taught by the Director of HSSP, and draws upon faculty from throughout the university as guest lecturers.  This course provides a broad examination of the cultural, political, personal, and socioeconomic dimensions of health, healthcare, and the health sciences.  UC 105-106 uses a topical format to explore the interfaces of these dimensions in various health science fields.  This content will provide a foundation for professional involvement in health care and science by exposing students to the complexity of health and the spectrum of health professions.

GSI duties will include, but may not be limited to:

  • participation in GSI Training as assigned by the HSSP Director
  • attend all UC 105-106 lectures, and attend 4-6 evening events as assigned
  • facilitate 3 discussion sections
