Application Procedure
To apply:
Applicants should write an email in German to Dr. Hartmut Rastalsky at hmr@umich.edu describing their teaching experience and their background in German. Applicants should send their resume, highlighting their teaching experience, as an attachment to this email. Previous applicants who have indicated a continuing interest in open positions in German will automatically be considered.
Selection Criteria will include:
- Teaching experience
- Native or native-like fluency in German
- Recommendations and student evaluations, if any
- Applicant's good standing in her/his degree program
- Availability of funding & applicant's time within 10-term limit
- Relevance to applicant's graduate training and work experience
- Applicability of applicant's interests to department curriculum
- Other indications of applicant's talent for teaching
Selection Process (please refer to the "Timeline" above for additional details)
Applicants whose email and resume indicate the most promise with regard to the above selection criteria will be interviewed. Applicants should bring the following materials to the interview if they are available:
- a copy of the applicant's University of Michigan transcript (inofficial copies will suffice). If the applicant cannot bring this to the interview, s/he should provide it as soon as possible after the interview
- copies of ALL course evaluations from any courses the applicant has taught we do not want to see just a selection of the best evaluations
- if the applicant has taught for many years, evaluations from the last two years of teaching will suffice
- letters of recommendation from previous teaching supervisors or others familiar with the applicant's ability to teach
- a videotape of the applicant's teaching.
The final hiring decision will be made in accordance with the selection criteria listed above.
Late Appointment Process
Applicants who have missed the deadline may still send an application in accordance with the above process, and will be considered for the position according to the same criteria if a final hiring decision has not yet been made at that time.
Unsuccessful applications
Unsuccessful applications will be retained for consideration in the event that there are last minute openings. Upon request, an unsuccessful applicant will receive, within fourteen (14) calendar days, a written explanation of the reasons for denial of employment, or an in-person interview if preferred.
