Application Procedure
GSI positions are used as a recruiting tool and committed long in advance to incoming students or reserved for continuing students. Occasionally a position opens up when a student has to defer studies to a later term, or terminates his/her studies prematurely. When a GSI position opens up it is posted in the Department near the Graduate Student Service Coordinator's office. Any GSI appointment is made on the basis of the student's academic performance, experience and fit for the particular teaching subject, and, to some extent, financial need. Note that students who apply to a posted position usually do so out of financial need, and are not necessarily the most competitive candidates for the job. The Graduate Committee takes into consideration all eligible students when filling an open GSI position.
