Postings: Civil & Environmental Engin

School/College

Engineering

Department Name

Civil & Environmental Engin

Application Procedure

As soon as the probable student enrollment is known for a set of courses which usually uses the services of a GSI, we put together the GSI listing for posting.  The faculty has set the rule that there is a 30% GSI assigned to a course that has 50 students.  However, one 30% GSI will be assigned to a course with 25 students, if there is a scheduled lab.  The student fills out an application obtained from the dept and hands it in to the dept main office.  Reta Teachout distributes the applications to the instructor of the course that the student requested.  The instructor makes the decision as to whether he wants to employ that student for his/her course or makes the decision between more than one applicant depending upon the qualifications of the student as to his knowledge of the particular course.  Has he GSI'd the course before?  What was his grade if he had taken the course here?  What is his field of expertise?  Is he a doctoral candidate in that field, which in our dept is usually the case, etc.  The student is usually notified by the instructor and comes to Reta Teachout's office to do the final paperwork.  The fraction calculation form is created by Reta Teachout with the calculations supplied by the course instructor.  After this has been completed it is signed by the course instructor and the student and sent in either together with the GSI appointment or following up on a pre-submitted GSI spreadsheet.

(The salary rate is the Engineering rate, which this year was $14,396 full time rate per term.)

(Civil & Environmental Engineering does not employ GSSA's.)
