Application Procedure
- Openings could include all 100-, 200-, 300-, 400- and some 500-level courses. Duties vary by course assignment.
- Please indicate your interest by completing a GSI Position Application. An e-mail will be sent to all EECS students when the applications are available. Specific course preferences should be made in writing at the time of application. Applications are also available from Karen Liska in Rm. 3300 EECS and should be returned to her either via e-mail ( liska@umich.edu ) or hard copy.
- Guaranteed financial aid students need only complete a preference form, available from Karen Liska in Rm. 3300 EECS
- Selection Criteria will include:
- Departmental Merit-Based Financial Aid Eligibility
- EECS Student Status
- Academic Standing
- Extent of prior instructional experience
- Availability of Funding
- ELI IGSI Score (if applicable)
- Prior GSI evaluation scores
- Decisions will be made by the EECS Financial Aid Chair for each program; EE, EES and CSE.
Typical Duration of Postings
Postings take place once per fall and winter term and typically are for 2-3 weeks (2 weeks minimum).
There are no postings for spring or summer.

Solicitation and application sent directly to EECS students to their specific e-mail groups and posted outside 3300 EECS
Additional Information
- The majority of selection decisions will be made by July 15 for fall term and December 15 for winter term. Additional selections are made up to the beginning of classes for openings as they occur.
- Successful applicants will be notified via e-mail. A message will be sent to all assigned grad students within 14 days after the first major round of assignments are made (July 15 and December 15).
- Unsuccessful GSI applicants will be placed on a prioritized waiting list for position openings. Priority is given to length in program and GPA within length of program groupings.
- Unsuccessful applications will be retained for consideration in the even that there are last minute openings. Upon request, any applicant denied employment will receive, within fourteen (14) calendar days, a written explanation of the reasons for denial of employment, unless he or she states a preference for an in-person interview with the hiring agent(s).
