Application Procedure

When applying for more than one position, please rank your preferences and list them on an index card.  List all relevant courses that you have had and the grade you received.  All decisions will be posted.  Unsuccessful applications will be retained for consideration in the event that there are late openings.  Please check our website for the list of courses.

A quarter-time graduate student instructor position earns a stipend based on the .25 appointment in addition to health benefits and full tuition for the term of the appointment. 

To apply:  Fill-out an application, indicate your interest and explain your qualifications in writing.  The Associate Dean with input from the faculty member teaching the course will make selections based upon the criteria listed below.

  1. Command of the Course Material
    1. Demonstrated mastery of the material in the course
      Performance in the course itself
      Previous coursework/work experience
    2. Overall academic performance
  2. Teaching Skills/Promise
    1. Teaching experience/skills
      Prior teaching performance (here or elsewhere)
      Particular skills for a course: e.g. leading discussions, assisting/assessing writing, strong quantitative skills, etc.
    2. Rapport with the instructor (usually assessed by instructor preferences among candidates)
    3. Interpersonal and communication skills
      Ability to establish good rapport with the full range of Ford School students,
      particularly those having trouble
      Approachable, supportive, a good listener
      Ability to understand, diagnose, and address student difficulties
      Strong presentation/group interaction skills
      Capable of GSIing his/her fellow students (special challenge in Ford School students)
      General maturity
