10.29.07: Regents approve replacement of Towsley Center for Children

The University will replace the Towsley Center for Children with a new facility that will broaden U-M's capacity for child-care. The Board of Regents approved the building design on October 25. The new structure will combine the U-M Children's Center for Working Families and Pound House — both built before 1915 — into a single center. The building replacement project is a result of the Child Care Initiative, begun in 2005 by President Mary Sue Coleman to provide more full-time child-care on campus, develop new infant and toddler care programs and improve University facilities for early childhood education and care. 10.15.07: University of Michigan Children's Center Infant Program Opens

As part of the U-M Child Care Initiative, the Children’s Center on North Ingalls has been renovated through the summer and opened on Tuesday, September 4 with a new room for infants. The program can serve 8 infants in the mornings and 8 in the afternoons. This program is part of a campus wide effort to expand support of faculty, staff and students who need child care on or near campus. The UMCC renovation also upgraded other classrooms, created a new multi–purpose play space and children’s library, and upgraded the playgrounds. Read more...

The unexpected recent arrival of a nesting mother duck and her newly hatched brood in the U-M Children's Center playground area off of the North Ingalls Building temporarily stalled construction of new facilities for infant care. Read more...

4.19.07: Towsley Children's House slated for construction

The Board of Regents approved a proposal to replace the Towsley Center for Children with a new facility that will increase the University’s capacity for child care. The new building will be located within the same footprint as the current Towsley Center on S. Forest and will combine the U-M Children’s Center for Working Families (UMCCWF) and Pound House — both built before 1915 — into a single new center, tentatively called the Towsley Children’s House.
