RIF Resources: Did You Know?
RIF e-Newsletters and Announcements
If you receive written notification that you will be placed on RIF status, you will be added to a RIF Communications email group. You may periodically receive a RIF Resources e-Newsletter, which will contain valuable information for managing your RIF status, as well as periodic announcements of upcoming workshops and potential employment opportunities.
Did You Know?
- CEW Workshops
Periodic workshops for UM employees are sponsored by the Center for the Education of Women (CEW); these workshops are also open to men. Dates/times of future workshops will be shared with you via the RIF Communications e-mail group. As a staff member affected by RIF status, none of the programs will cost more than $25.00 and payment options are as follows: fee covered by department (P-Card information); personal pay; or contact CEW and inquire about a program fee scholarship. There continues to be no cost for individual counseling appointments. For more information about CEW go to: http://www.umich.edu/~cew/ - Temporary Staffing Services (TSS)
TSS works with departments to find candidates to meet departmental temporary staffing needs. RIFs, as well as external applicants, may be employed. To be considered, you will need to complete a temporary application and provide a resume. For more information about TSS go to: http://hr.umich.edu/temps
(Note: accepting a temporary UM position does not jeopardize your RIF Status) - UM Email/Web Access
UM email/web access should be continued for RIFs throughout the entire RIF/layoff period (up to 12 months). Without this access, RIF’d employees may not be able to view the job postings nor receive the RIF Resources e-Newsletters or other RIF Communications. If you would like to receive RIF Communications, but prefer not to use the UM email account, please provide us with an alternate email address as follows: employment.services@umich.edu. If you are not interested in continuing to receive periodic RIF Communications emails, follow the instructions in the “Subscriber” section at the end of each RIF Communication. - Skills Assessment
Do you want to know how your skills measure up? You can evaluate/measure a variety of your skill-sets in our Assessment Center. Computerized testing is available to assess the following skill-sets: keyboarding; data entry; Excel; PowerPoint; Word and many others. If you are interested in finding out your proficiency in any/all of these areas, please contact us at (734) 763-5740 and request an assessment date and time. - Careers at Michigan — the New Jobs Website
The new Careers at Michigan website allows you to apply for jobs online by creating a resume on the system or uploading an existing resume. Applicant materials will be immediately sent to the hiring manager. Applicants will be able to search for openings based on their interests or even have emails sent when a job is posted that matches their criteria. Most communication between hiring managers and applicants will be via email. - Reinstatement of Service Date
Staff members affected by Reduction-In-Force who do not find alternate regular employment at the University within the 12-month period of RIF status will be terminated. However, if a staff member is rehired into a regular position within 12 months of the termination date, s/he may become eligible for reinstatement of his/her orginial service date. For details, see Standard Practice Guide (SPG) 201.49 - Rehire, Reinstatement and Credit for Prior Service.
