Services and Resources for Reduction-In-Force Status Employees
Dealing with the challenges of RIF status can be daunting; however, you are not alone. Human Resources (HR) Staff are here to offer you assistance with your job search.
Informational Interview and Consultation
As a staff member facing layoff or laid-off, you are urged to contact your HR Office for assistance with reviewing the policies and procedures that apply to Reduction in Force status (SPG 201.72). See locations of HR Offices listed below.
Credentials File (Ann Arbor Campus Only)
Recruiting and Employment Services will maintain a credentials file on your behalf. The file will contain resumes, letters of recommendation, and any other materials you provide for review that may aid in identifying vacant positions for which you may be qualified.
Preferential Consideration
As a University of Michigan staff member, while on RIF status, you are entitled to receive preferential consideration for transfer to an open regular position for which you are qualified. Preference is limited to vacant positions in your former classification or other vacant positions if the minimum departmental qualifications are met.

Dealing With The Grief Cycle: You are likely to have many different feelings initially – shock, disbelief, and a feeling of numbness. These feelings are normal and frequently pass in a short time. In addition, you may experience frustration, anger and fear about what has happened and what might happen to you. At the same time, family members and significant others in your life may also experience similar feelings, which can complicate your own reactions. Some individuals find that physical symptoms appear during times of stress, such as problems with eating, sleep, energy level, and other behaviors that are upsetting. If these symptoms do not re-adjust in a short time, then you may find it helpful to seek supportive counseling.
What You Can Do: We hope that you will take a positive, constructive approach so that the emotions, behaviors, and problems you experience during this time will not hamper your efforts in finding another position. If you are concerned about yourself, concerned about another’s ability to cope with the change in your employment, or just want to talk over your options, FASAP counselors are available to discuss your concerns in a confidential setting.
There is no cost for this confidential service. Counselors will provide support, guidance and referrals to other services when appropriate. To schedule an appointment, call FASAP at 734/936-8660.
You are encouraged to use FASAP services to reduce the impact of this change in employment and to increase your opportunities for a successful outcome.
The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FASAP) provides assistance to faculty and staff members regarding a variety of personal and work-related concerns. FASAP professionals can provide counseling and assistance to employees who are experiencing job loss in a supportive and totally confidential setting. If needed, FASAP staff can refer you to Washtenaw County agencies, which can assist with many financial and personal needs. FASAP and its services are available to you at no cost.
