Termination is the generic term for the ending of the employment relationship at the initiative of the staff member or the University for any reason, including misconduct. A misconduct termination, however, is usually referred to as a discharge.
When Termination of Employment Is at the Employee’s Initiative
Employee
- Should provide written notice (such as hand-written note, email, text message) of intent to leave the current position, including proposed last day of employment. Notice should be provided to the appropriate department administrator.
- Resignation - Termination at the employee’s initiative with at least two (2) weeks written notice and the employee works through the effective date of resignation.
- Quit - Termination at the employee’s initiative without two (2) weeks notice or having given two (2) weeks notice, the employee fails to work through the effective date.
Department
- Confirm receipt of the employee’s notice of resignation.
- When an employee is leaving the university, process the termination via the termination workflow. Include the employee’s written notice as supporting documentation. Use the Termination/Transfer checklist to support offboarding.
- When an employee is transferring to another unit, use the Termination/Transfer checklist to support offboarding.
