Early Career Leaders: Perspectives on Navigating Change: A Conversation with Community Members

This session will include an overview of organizational and individual change. A panel of U-M staff members will also share their experiences and lessons-learned to navigate change in the workplace. The panel will answer questions posed by the facilitator and participants if time allows.

You will learn to:

  • Use organizational and personal change models when managing change initiatives 

  • Explore commonalities and differences in navigating change across the university

You will benefit by:

  • Understanding how to navigate a change given organizational priorities and individual resistance to that change 

  • Acquiring strategies, tips and tools to apply to your next change initiative

Any U-M faculty or staff member who would like to learn how to more effectively navigate change

About the Presenters:

Session facilitator: 

Krista Stelmaszek is an organizational development consultant with Organizational Learning. She specializes in human resources and organizational development and consults with units to design organizational culture and change management programming. She will soon earn her executive coaching certification. Krista has co-written and developed the “Leading through Change” series for Organizational Learning.

Panel Members:

Patrick Lyall joined the Ford School last fall to serve as the registrar. Prior to his current position, Patrick worked in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for over six years. He served multiple roles there, including supervising and mentoring a team of 60 regular, seasonal and temporary employees; leading change initiatives to streamline processes; and to implement systems to improve workflow. 

Heather Wagenschutz has served as an organizational development specialist and executive coach for Michigan Engineering’s faculty and staff since 2020. She began at Michigan Medicine where she held the roles of trainer, program manager, co-director and left as the director of curriculum services for the Office of Medical Student Education.

Vikram (Vik) Sukumar is the chief department administrator for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Prior to his current role, he served as the chief department administrator for the Department of Neurology. Vik has served, and continues to serve, on a number of institutional committees including the UMMG Budget and Finance Committee (BFC), the Faculty Workforce Planning Committee (FWPC), and the Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) Governance Board.
